1993

Baby Moondream: purple pegasus w/blue m & t, moon & star
Baby Stargaze: blue w/pink m&t, two smiling stars
Baby Sunset: dark magenta pink w/yellow hair, sleepy sun
Some of the earliest issues of 1993, these three Bedtime Newborns saw the beginning of what is sometimes labelled the end of UK ponies. All ponies of this era were carded with dark pink cards and shared stories with the rest of their set and these were certainly no exception. None of the three ever broke into the comic, due to the extremely popular launch of the Seven Character ponies that same year. A common mistake is to call Baby Moondream 'Napper', when her name is indeed the former. Each baby came with a bottle which matched the colour of her mane.

Baby Susie: blue w/yellow hair, dalmation w/ball
Spot: yellow & blue dalmation pup
Baby Billie: pink w/purple hair, bunny
Bunny: purple & pink bunny
Baby Katie: yellow w/pink hair, kitten
Kitty: pink & yellow kitten
The Best Friends Baby Ponies were in many ways a return to how My Little Pony had used to be. Each baby pony came with a special pony pal which was reflected also in their symbols. All the babies were earthlings and had solid colour bodies and hair. In the pamphlet for this year Baby Katie and Baby Billie are both misrepresented, Billie being the wrong colour and Katie being in the wrong pose.
There is also an issue of Baby Susie in Baby Blossom's pose - her place of origin is unknown.

Starlight: pink w/yellow/dk.pink streak, blue & pink stars.
Bangles: purple w/dk.pink/green streak, gold bracelet.
Beautiful Bows: yellow w/orange/purple streak, pink & purple bows.
The Hairdo ponies were some of 1993's prettiest and most adventurous ponies. Each coated with a pearly sheen, they came with twisty 'beads' attached to their heads and long silky hair to style in many different ways. Each Hairdo Pony also had a coloured streak in her mane and this is most noticeable in Starlight who was based on the original Tales Character. Each pony also came with a comb with a mirror on the top and of the three Beautiful Bows is the hardest to find.

Thanks to Raindrop for the picture of Daddy Berrytown

The Family Friends and Family Babies, or Rainbow Families as they were also known were a development in some ways of the original Loving Family Babies. This time the parents had identical hair and body colours in such a design that the colours ran horizontally rather than vertically. The Daddy ponies all stood in a feminine pose - that of Shady or Cupcake - and the babies reflected also the same identical colour schemes. Each pony had a different symbol, however. Although featured briefly in TV episodes, these families were often misrepresented in name and/or in the number of members and it was only when they appeared in UK comics that they were given their real names - Sunbright, Berrytown and Meadowsweet. In advertising material Baby Berrytown was shown in the wrong pose.

Melody: dk.pink w/blue/yellow streak, microphone & stars
Jazzie: yellow w/red/green streak, winged heart
Hip Hop: green w/dk.pink/orange streak, winged skate.
The Rollerskates ponies are one of the most amusing and bizarre My Little Pony sets of the last few years. Made with a pull-back mechanism so that they could actually 'skate' across a shiny surface, they all stood in a slight adaptation of Posey's pose and came with their own sunglasses and CD walkman accessories. Although their manes were long and had a coloured streak, their tails were short to stop them getting caught under the wheels. This set featured a new version of the Seven Character pony Melody, only now she had moulded on skates and a yellow streak in her hair. In one of the UK stories Melody is shown wearing these skates and she is also featured on a UK clock.
Each pony is shown wearing her correct accessories in the picture - please note that Hip Hop should also have a pair of sunglasses.

Starlight: pink w/yellow m&t, blue & yellow stars
Sweetheart: white w/dk.pink m&t, hearts
Melody: dk.pink w/blue, microphone & stars
Bright Eyes: aqua w/orange hair, notebook & pen
Patch: peach w/dk.pink hair, patch
Clover: lavender w/pink hair, clover leaves
Bon Bon: yellow w/purple hair, aqua & purple sweet.
The Seven Characters are possibly some of the best known of the UK issued ponies, as they were also the stars of the My Little Pony Tales cartoon series which aired on US Cable Television. THey were also very much the focus of the later UK comic strips and the last annual of 1994 befor production of My Little Pony, the first generation ceased completely. Although well publicised, they are not easy to come across secondhand.
Initially they were issued only with combs and ribbons but a reissue in Germany gave them stickers too and in Holland different coloured versions of these ponies were sold.

Kiss & Tell: Pink w/blue hair & tinsel, envelope w/lips
Candy Kisses: Orange w/dk.pink hair & red tinsel, lips and xx
Kiss & Make Up: blue w/purple hair & tinsel, heart and lipstick
Although there were Sweet Kisses sold in the USA as Sweetheart Sister style ponies, the versions that found their way onto European shelves were made in the traditional body moulds. Like in America, there were three, and they had special lips which appeared in cold water and disappeared in warm water. Symbols and colours were similar also, with the exception of Candy Kisses, who was orange in contrast to the US white Lovin' Kisses.
Each Sweet Kisses pony had tinsel in her mane and was issued with a long handled comb, ribbon and a fake tube of lipstick which, when dipped in cold water could make the lips reappear.

Princess Sparkle: pastel glittered pink w/purple hair & pastel tinsel, dk.pink cape w/crown symbol, yellow crown and bow.
<better pic coming soon!>
Princess Sparkle (French: Princesse De Lumiere, German: Prinzessin Gloria) was another extravagantly designed pony of the later years. She was completely coated in pastel pink glitter and had a fibre-optic crown which would light up in different colours when the bow on her collar was turned. She had no symbol, but a cape which , apart from cunningly hiding the battery compartment had a crown emblem on one side. Princess Sparkle made one brief appearance in the pony comic - as a part of one of Sweetheart's dreams.
