1989

After 1987, many of the ponies sold in the UK became Made in China but a number of ponies in this year had versions Made In Hong Kong and Made In China. Kiss Curl is one of these ponies.

1988 brought no new additions to the exclusive UK pony market but in 1989 we were introduced to two more full sets, two playset ponies, a building and three UK only baby ponies.

Baby Sister Sweet Celebrations: blue w/pink/dk.green hair, presents & balloons - GIRL
Baby Brother Bright Bouquet: pink w/purple/blue hair, flowers & hearts - BOY
Baby Brother Apple Delight: white w/yellow/pale red hair, apples & trees - BOY
The Loving Family Ponies were issued in the USA and the UK simultaneously. However, there were immediate differences. Whilst the USA sets consisted of three ponies, in the UK we had four, a Mummy, a Daddy, a Baby Sister and a Baby Brother. Of the nine released internationally there are versions made in China and Hong Kong but of the European babies there are only versions Made In China. There is little really to distinguish them from their sibling except the male or female pose. Baby Brother Bright Bouquet came with a purple bow tie and Baby Brother Apple Delight came with a yellow version. At the same time, as pictured on their backcards came various accessories such as highchairs and the like for the babies to play with. This was also the time when Pony Mummy Charms were put into packaging.

Baby Schoolbag = pink w/green, schoolbag
Baby Count-a-lot = white w/blue m&t, abacus
Baby Pictures = powder blue w/pink m&t, crayons
Baby Alphabet = purple w/yellow m&t, book w/E-e symbol.

Despite the collectafile pictures, the above link shows the four Playschool Babies as they were meant to look. Issued at the time of the Schoolhouse, they all came with ABC combs and freckled cheeks, and names relating to school accessories. Despite standing in a common and early female pose, Baby Schoolbag is intended to be a male pony, and in Holland he was sold in both green and blue and issued with a '1234' comb.
NOTE: These are their CORRECT names.

Sportstime = blue w/gold m&t, football (and I mean UK football)
Musictime = yellow w/purple m&t, music notes & triangle
Paintingtime = salmon pink w/yellow m&t, paint pallette
Playtime = mint green w/dk.pink m&t, skipping rope.
To fit in with the My Little Pony's 'Back To School' type theme, these Schooltime Ponies were the older student ponies. Again, all had freckles, were issued with ABC combs, and again, the only male of the group, Sportstime was shown in a recognised female pose. All of this set came with yellow and orange school bags as well as combs, and featured extensively in comics. Sportstime in particular became known for always saying 'Any sport's a good sport', but all of them developed their own individual characters as time went on. Paintingtime is often known as Art Time (as a direct translation from the German Artzeit) but this is incorrect.

My Little Pony Schoolhouse & 'Lady Lessons'(pink w/white hair, globe) as seen in the UK annual for 1992 and comics for the surrounding years.
The Schoolhouse was issued in 1990 and was one of the first UK buildings to have extensive numbers of accessories. It was the first exclusively UK building and it included two desks, blue and yellow books, rulers and pencils, a magic write board, school bell and cuckoo clock, skipping rope, globe, xylophone, slide, glasses and other accessories for the classroom. This was the first of the exclusively UK buildings and it was officially issued with no pony, despite being pictured in later brochures with Sportstime. There are rumours that one of the characters illustrated in the comics, Lady Lessons was actually made to go with the building but no pony has ever been sighted to confirm this rumour. The schoolhouse was issued several of the later years, but is not as common second hand as the Kitchen playset.

Sweet Clover = pink w/pink/dk.pink m&t, flowers
A rather strange little pony, Sweet Clover is without a doubt one of the harder ponies to find on the UK second hand market. Strangely she has been given all sorts of names on the pony trading network, including Pretty Hoof, Picknick-Pony, Clover Leaf and many others. However, as you can see from the advert (click here for ad) her correct name is indeed Sweet Clover. Unlike the later Good Weather, Sweet Clover did not really make an appearance in the comics and therefore was probably less in demand. I certainly do not personally recall seeing her in the shops, although I know she was sold here. Sweet Clover came with many accessories to help her have her picnic, including cutlery, plates, hair slides, and even a teddy bear toy (shown in picture) for her to play with (note the advert image has actually been reversed and Sweet Clover's true pose is that of Bow Tie.) Unlike many ponies of this era, she does not have freckles, and is probably one of the most beautiful UK ponies of this time.

Rosette = sand yellow w/burnt orange/yellow m&t, three rosettes.
Rosette was issued at the same time as Sweet Clover and like her playset counterpart, played little part in the public eye. She made no appearance at all in the UK comic strips and the pictures shown on brochures did not do her justice, being that they hid her yellow lion-like streaks of hair. She is a freckled pony, like many of her time, and comes with a similar set up to the one Butterscotch was released with in this country many years before, although whilst that one was named the 'Gymnkhana', the new one was simply called Prize Day. Strangely, few people seem to know her real name, and she is often referred to simply as the 'Prize Day Pony'.

Pony Show Stable (#2)
Whilst in America this second edition stable was issued as 'Home Sweet Home', in the UK it was simply a reissue with different coloured walls and accessories. The most notable thing about this stable, however, was the Lemon Drop that was issued with it. The original Lemon Drop was made in Hong Kong but at the time of this re-issue ponies sold in Great Britain were no longer manufactured in this area. This meant a Chinese made version was issued, with slightly more vivid colours and symbol than her predecessor. Brandy the dog, however, remained the same. Note that the accessories issued with this building match those sold with the original stabel in design, whilst the version in the USA had different accessories.
