THE UK STORY....
The story really begins in 1985.
Till then there was no My Little Pony in the UK.
But even in 1985 there were
some UK exclusive ponies thrust upon the British market..................

Called Surfdancer, Wave Breaker
and Sea Spray, these three adult sea ponies
were the UK's equivalent of Sealight, Wavedancer and Seawinkle,. There is even an Italian version of what is believed to be Wavebreaker, but the Italian ponies we'll cover later. Please note that the picture shows Sea Spray with a yellow shell when hers is actually purple. Although clearly sold in the United Kingdom, Hasbro's 1987 MLP fact file did not include them under the category of Sea Ponies, despite claiming to have included all the mlps on offer. Instead the file shows four of the six Year 3 adult Sea Ponies, but of these only White Cap & Sea Mist made a brief comic appearance, and they are rarely found in the UK. |

Even as early on as this Hasbro
were making cute baby ponies. Baby Applejack
and Baby Bow Tie were both released in this year, but as part of different sets. Baby Applejack was a 'play and care set baby' along with Babies Blossom & Cotton Candy, whilst Baby Bow Tie had her very own pink stroller. In 1986 this stroller was reissued with a different pony and in a different colour. Strangely, neither baby had freckles, despite their mothers both having this unusual feature. <picture of Baby Blossom mint in UK box coming soon> There are also variant poses for Applejack and Bow Tie |
![]() Cascade = pale yellow w/green m&t, aqua, green & blue waterfalls symbol |
1985 was also the first year for
the pony waterfall, issued with a pony called
Cascade. Strangely she is a lot harder to find than Sprinkles, the other Waterfall pony, despite the fact that only Cascade is pictured on Hasbro UK's pony inserts. The playset itself was also different, having a green base rather than a white one (picture coming soon) - this version was also sold in the UK with Sprinkles. |
![]() Confetti = white w/orange/pink/blue/fl.yellow m&t, confetti symbol |
Although Confetti was released
in the USA, the significance of her name was only played
upon in Europe and Australia (so I believe). Standing in Bow Tie's shy pose, and wearing a beautiful wedding gown, Confetti looked every part the bride to be. She was the only one of the second set of Hong Kong made Rainbow Ponies to be sold in the United Kingdom, at least as far as I know. There are, however, many Italian made versions which are becoming increasingly more common on the UK second hand market and even, unbeknownst to many, on Ebay. |
![]() Tutti Frutti = gold with dk.green/yellow streak, citrus fruit & cherries symbol. |
Tutti Frutti, along with
her birthday accessories was also issued this year. Though in other parts
of Europe
her set contained four of everything in the UK it contained six, from invited to cake slices and party hats She also had a unique Pin The Tail On The Pony game - as it featured her and not the American Twinkle Eye Party Time. Tutti Frutti is quite a unique pony as she set the precedent for many sets of ponies, such as the Magic Message Ponies that followed her. How? Well, Tutti Frutti is the first known pony to have had a streak of a different colour in her mane, which up until this point was a purely unicorn characteristic. Please note one of the invitations and the blindfold are missing from this picture. |
